The focal point of the Centre is the Dhamma Yaung Chi Ceti (Light of the Dhamma Pagoda). It is set in the grounds, adjacent to the main house. This beautiful Pagoda, is modelled on the Pagoda at the International Meditation Centre, Yangon, Myanmar. It was built and dedicated in 1989.
The Centre was founded in 1980 and is owned and run by the Sayagyi U Ba Khin Memorial Trust, a registered charity. The teaching is given or directed by Mother Sayamagyi, the senior disciple of Sayagyi U Ba Khin, after whom the tradition is named. Mother Sayamagyi has been teaching Buddhist meditation for over fifty years. There are a number of assistant teachers trained by her who assist or deputise as required. |
The students who come to do courses at the Centre are from all walks of life, professions, religions, cultural backgrounds, races and countries. Anyone who comes with an open mind can gain the necessary confidence in the technique and in himself or herself. Thus, all can attain benefits which will be proportionate to the amount of balanced effort they make. For details on the meditation, please see our home page.
Daily meditation sessions are conducted in the meditation hall, where the students sit on cushions facing the teachers. Cushions are provided. The hall has an inductive loop for those with hearing difficulties. |
Accommodation is provided
in the main house or in one of the accommodation buildings set around a
courtyard.
Students are accommodated in dormitories.
Four acres of grounds with wooden seats placed in sheltered spots provide a pleasant area for relaxation, weather permitting. The winding path in the shaded paddock is regularly used by students wishing to go for a walk between meditation sessions. |
Students are asked to contribute £220 per 10-day course as a contribution towards the cost of food, heat and light. There is no charge for the teaching. Those with financial difficulties are invited to approach the management.
